Whipping around a right hand corner on a green in the dead of night to a major route, I notice a man on the floor against the signal pole. In a brief glimpse my head thinks, why would he be there of all places? A pain throbs in my heart, I hope he doesn't do anything stupid like step before a car. I make it a little ways before my conscience gets the better of me and pulled a Uey. I pause now at the green light, indicator flashing with stranger on my left. You okay I ask from my now lowered window. "Yeah". Bad night? With a depressed nod "My best friend just beat me up". Ouch, I'm sorry. Not trying to pry but leave him with something, I say keep your chin up, don't let this keep you down. Bad things are always happening to us. "Thanks" and with a soulful "God bless", was hand waving and now wearing a smile. Without further pause on my green, thumbs up was the last he saw of me. I believe he thinks an Angel just gave him a sign and saved his Life.
The incident reminded me of a time when I was disembarking a NYC train. I became incensed when I got jolted blatantly by a boarding giant at the doorway. It was so hard my first reaction was to whip around to re-board the train to fill the position over where he now sat. In a split second a stranger, a woman out of nowhere, from behind gently rested her hand on my shoulder and whispered "he's not worth it" before I had the chance to get back on. Shocked back into reality by someone whom had noticed, this Angel saved two lives that day as I thanked her with my eyes and quietly continued on to work.
It's the little interactions at the right times that make the greatest differences. Be on the lookout for the pains you recognize on those around you. You can save Lives too with a simple act of compassion.
